Summary
Directs the Treasury to make special gold, silver, and half-dollar coins to celebrate 200 years since Harriet Tubman's birth in 2024.
What problem does this solve?
Harriet Tubman's 200th birthday lacked a major national honor recognizing her vast contributions to American history. This law creates special coins to celebrate her legacy and raises money for historical centers that continue her work.
What does this law do?
Authorizes three commemorative coins
Directs the U.S. Mint to create up to 50,000 $5 gold coins, 400,000 $1 silver coins, and 750,000 half-dollar coins.
Adds surcharges to fund organizations
Adds a fee to the sale of each coin: $35 for gold, $10 for silver, and $5 for half-dollar. This money is given to two historical organizations related to Tubman's life.
Specifies coin designs
Requires designs to represent Harriet Tubman's legacy as an abolitionist, with at least one coin showing her image. The coins must also include standard inscriptions like 'Liberty' and '2024'.
Sets a limited time for issuance
Allows the coins to be sold for one year only, from January 1, 2024, to December 31, 2024.
Who does this affect?
- Coin collectors
- Historical organizations
- Museums
What is the real world impact?
•
Honors a historical icon
Creates a lasting, national tribute to Harriet Tubman for her 200th birthday, recognizing her work as an abolitionist, spy, and civil rights advocate.
•
Funds historical organizations
Raises money through a surcharge on each coin sold. The funds go to the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center and The Harriet Tubman Home, Inc. to support their missions.
When does this start?
The commemorative coins will be available for purchase only during the 2024 calendar year.
